Mateo Kovacic scored one of the goals of the season for Chelsea against Liverpool.

The Blues were 2-0 down when the ball dropped to the Croatian on the edge of the box after a Marcos Alonso free-kick was palmed away in the 42nd minute.

Instead of taking a touch, the former Real Madrid man struck a wondrous first-time volleyed effort that cannoned in off the post.

The technique was utterly outrageous and you'll do very well to find a better volleyed goal in 2022.

It was just the third Premier League goal for Kovacic and undoubtedly his best. His other strikes, against Everton and Aston Villa, were also from outside of the box.

But this goal was one you score in your wildest dreams and prompted a strange but perfectly apt noise from Gary Neville on co-commentary.

Annoyingly, there was a VAR check on Kovacic's stunner as those at Stockley Park looked to see if any players offside had interfered with play.

There was absolutely nothing in it though and the belter of a goal rightly stood.

Liverpool were 2-0 up through goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah but Kovacic's worldie reduced the deficit, before Christian Pulisic levelled matters minutes later in a pulsating first half at Stamford Bridge.
