Marcos Rojo has been banned from captaining Boca Juniors for a month thanks to a dressing room rule.

The centre back was sent off during a 1-0 victory over River Plate eight days ago, after catching Nicolas De la Cruz in the face with a high boot.

Rojo received a one-match ban from the Argentine FA and missed Thursday's 1-0 victory over Lanus.

He's received a more significant punishment from his own club however.

Per the Daily Star, Boca manager Hugo Ibarra's dressing room rules means the former Manchester United man must relinquish the armband until October.

Rojo took it in his stride and explained emotions run high during the Superclasico.

He admitted: "It doesn't bother me. The classics are like that, gets a little too much.

"I made three fouls in the whole game, we didn't make as many fouls, we made some tactical fouls, it's not that we had an aggressive game or strange things.

"They played this way and everything was fine, they celebrated, and now that we did it a bit, it bothers us. We are calm with the things we did, how we faced the game and how we won it."

Rojo six seven years at United and managed to go his entire spell in England without a red card. Shocking, we know.

He made 122 appearances for the Red Devils and helped them win the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.

The 32-year-old fell down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer however and he joined Estudiantes on loan in 2020.

Rojo would return to his homeland the following February with Boca on a permanent deal.

He told United fans in a statement: “I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody at Manchester United who have helped me in the last 6 years.

"Since arriving in 2014 I have always felt privileged to be part of this incredible club with so much history. Thank you to all the fans who have always supported me when wearing the Manchester United jersey.

"Now begins a new chapter for me in my career but I will always have Manchester United in my heart."
