Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has outlined five reasons why he chose to join his current club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.

The France centre-back brought his 10-year association with Real to an end by electing to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who were coming off the back of a second-placed finish in the Premier League table.

And after a summer that saw them bring in Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, United were expected to once again challenge for the title.

It didn't work out that way, despite Solskjaer's side picking up 13 points from their opening five matches. They won one match out of their next seven, including a humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool, and the Norwegian was sacked after a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick was unable to steer the ship in the right direction, and United ended the season in sixth place.

For Varane, it was a campaign affected by injury, as he was restricted to 22 league appearances. But he showed his importance to the side when available, and has continued to prove that this term under Erik ten Hag.

Recently, Varane spoke with BT Sport as part of their 'What I Wore' series, and gave his reasons for moving to Old Trafford.

When presented with a United shirt, Varane outlined the pride he felt when he officially signed on the dotted line to join the club in 2021.

He explained (quotes via United's official website): "It was a great moment. It's a huge club with some of the best fans in the world and the history of the club is something special.

"Everything [about the club], the spirit, the philosophy, the passion around the club, it is something very special and different.

"I like [the current home shirt] because it's a bit old school. I like the collar. When I wear it, I feel I have to give 100 per cent of myself and everything on the pitch.

"I can't give up, and when I wear the shirt I feel that mentality."

The Frenchman is currently out of action with an ankle injury, and no return date has been officially set by Ten Hag.

However, the Dutchman said last month that he expected the defender to return before the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which takes place on June 3.
