Manchester United are now confident of signing major Liverpool target Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, according to a fresh report.

Gakpo has been one of the stars of the World Cup, having netted three goals in as many games for the Netherlands in Qatar.

The 23-year-old had been contacted about a move to Man Utd in the summer, however, a transfer was blocked by PSV, who were unwilling to let a prized asset leave late in the window, without sufficient time to find a replacement.

Since the forward has scored 13 goals and notched 17 assists for PSV in all competitions.

Gakpo looks set for a Premier League move in January, with Liverpool believed to be interested, but according to a fresh report, Man Utd are confident of securing the Netherlands star’s services.

Gakpo to Man Utd?

Man Utd are increasingly confident they can sign Gakpo in January rather than wait until next summer, according to Football Insider.

The site had previously claimed that Man Utd were making progress in the pursuit of the forward, and had reached an “agreement in principle” with the player.

The Red Devils are reportedly in regular contact with Gakpo’s camp and believe his performances in Qatar will make it harder for Eindhoven to keep hold of him in January.

Indeed, the Dutch giants will likely benefit from a post-World Cup inflation to Gakpo’s price after the star’s group stage performances.

However, the publication claims that Man Utd are unlikely to be deterred by Gakpo’s £50million+ transfer fee.

PSV reportedly rejected offers from multiple Premier League clubs last summer, including Leeds United, Everton and Southampton. However, the forward is said to have set his sights on Champions League football.
