Man Utd flop Angel Di Maria gives his opinion on the club's Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle

Di Maria is never shy to speak out against United.

Angel Di Maria gave his opinion on Manchester United’s Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle.

On Sunday, United beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to win the Carabao Cup, ending the club’s longest trophy drought for 40 years in the process.

Casemiro and Marcus Rashford netted first-half goals to help the Old Trafford club to their first silverware of any kind since 2017 when Jose Mourinho managed the club to Europa League glory.

Indeed, the trophy could be United’s first of many this season, with Erik ten Hag’s men still challenging in both the Europa League and FA Cup, and with an outside chance of winning the Premier League.

Di Maria’s response to Carabao Cup victory

Di Maria congratulated his compatriot Lisandro Martínez after the centre-back helped United to Carabao Cup glory.

Indeed, Di Maria infamously endured a torrid time at United. The winger spent one trophyless campaign at Old Trafford in 2014/15 before forcing an exit.

In turn, the 35-year-old is not a popular figure among the United faithful. However, Di Maria did show love for Martinez, after the centre-back’s exploits at Wembley.

Martinez, who is affectionately nicknamed ‘The Butcher’ for his uncompromising style of defending, posted a picture on Instagram in which he is proudly lifting the Carabao Cup.

And Di Maria responded to the post with three ‘applause’ emojis. Of course, the pair were international teammates as Argentina went on to win their first World Cup since 1986 in December.

The winger, who currently plies his trade in Serie A with Juventus, has in the past been deeply critical of his short spell in Manchester.

In an interview with Argentine TV network TyC Sports Di Maria once said: “My problem at Manchester was the coach.

“Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes.

“He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”

In the same interview, Di Maria added: “I didn’t give a f*ck about the Manchester United no.7.

“At first they talked to me a lot about it, it was just a shirt.”
