Manchester United had another signing lined up in the January transfer window, with the player 'ready' to join the club, according to Fabrizio Romano.

United did not spend big money in January, restricting their business to loan deals instead due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns.

They brought in goalkeeper Jack Butland from Crystal Palace, striker Wout Weghorst from Burnley, and midfielder Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich.

But while the new signings may not come across as star additions from the outside, they all help to fill specific needs in Erik ten Hag's squad.

United needed a new back-up goalkeeper following the return of Martin Dubravka to Newcastle. Butland fit the bill on that front, after Ten Hag (as per Manchester Evening News) had unsuccessfully attempted to convince Dean Henderson to cut short his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Weghorst, meanwhile, adds another forward option following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Dutch international's tall frame means he can hold the ball up and win aerial duels, while he is also effective at pressing from the front.

Sabitzer was a necessary signing following the injury suffered by Christian Eriksen, with Ten Hag needing to bring in an experienced midfielder to cover for his absence.

It has now been reported that United could have signed a fourth player in January, but the move did not end up going through.

Romano has claimed, on his official YouTube channel, that United had Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic ready to sign in January if Aaron Wan-Bissaka was to leave the club.

Wan-Bissaka had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford before the window opened, but the right-back was said to have impressed Ten Hag in deputising for the injured Diogo Dalot, and it was expected that he would stay at the club.

Juranovic, meanwhile, an attacking full-back who started every game for Croatia at the World Cup, was expected to leave the Scottish champions during the January transfer window.

Celtic could not agree terms on a new contract for the 27-year-old prior to the tournament, and accepted a bid from Bundesliga side Union Berlin. Sky Sports reported that the fee was £7.5 million plus add-ons.

The Croatia star, therefore, has now joined up with the side that sit in second place in the Bundesliga at present, instead of moving to Old Trafford in January.
