"Unfortunately for us..." - Sir Alex Ferguson identifies Man Utd's biggest weakness that could cost them

Sir Alex Ferguson has identified a Manchester United weakness that could affect the club if not addressed this summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson has identified a Manchester United weakness that could affect the club if not addressed.

Ferguson was present at Wembley as Erik ten Hag's side defeated Newcastle 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup - their first trophy in nearly seven years.

The legendary United boss was also pictured in the director's box alongside current and former chief executives, Richard Arnold and David Gill, and the club's co-owner, Avram Glazer. Glazer was attending his first United game since the 2-1 Premier League opening day defeat to Brighton, which took place at Old Trafford in August.

Ferguson then congratulated Ten Hag on his team's victory prior to the dressing room entrance, before giving a rare interview to Sky Sports during the post-match celebrations.

Ferguson on Man Utd weakness

Speaking after the game, Ferguson praised Marcus Rashford after he scored his 25th goal of the season during the 2-0 win.

The England international is currently having his best season at Old Trafford, and has taken his game to new levels under Ten Hag's management after a challenging 2021/22 campaign.

But Ferguson still believes that Rashford is not a striker - an opinion that appears to be shared by the current boss, with the 25-year-old regularly playing on the left side of attack throughout his incredible goalscoring form.

But whilst praising Rashford, Ferguson said that United need more significant sources of goals.

The Scot explained: "I don't think he's a striker. He operates away from the left hand side. But he's fantastic.

"His finishing is good. He always keeps his shots down, which is really important. And he's on a great vein of form.

"Unfortunately for us, he is the main source of goals. We could do with another one, but he's doing it."

Whilst Rashford is in incredible form, United have lacked goals from other members of the team this season.

Their second-highest scorer is Bruno Fernandes, with seven goals. Anthony Martial and Antony both have six, with Jadon Sancho, Fred and Casemiro are on five.

But, with Martial often unavailable through injury this term, they have lacked goals from a central striker. Despite impressing with his general play, Wout Weghorst has scored only one goal in all competitions since his loan move from Burnley in January.

United, therefore, may need to prioritise signing a striker in the summer to ease the pressure on Rashford and create an additional goalscoring source - or hope that Martial, Sancho and co can raise their outputs further.
