Fuming Cristiano Ronaldo was not happy when Erik ten Hag took him off against Newcastle

It was a frustrating afternoon for Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo was visibly agitated when Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag took him off against Newcastle.

The Portuguese legend started the Premier League clash against the in-form Magpies, however, he endured a frustrating afternoon as he and his United teammates failed to break down the stubborn Newcastle defence.

Two minutes into the second half, Ronaldo managed to put the ball into the back of the net after being found by Jadon Sancho. Unfortunately, United’s celebrations were cut short as Ronaldo was adjudged to be offside in the build-up and therefore the goal was ruled out.

As United continued to push for the go-ahead goal, manager Ten Hag decided to make a change in the 72nd minute.

Marcus Rashford was the man coming off, and Ronaldo was the man being replaced. As expected, the 37-year-old was not impressed with his manager’s decision.

Ronaldo showed his discontent as he muttered to himself and shook his head whilst walking towards the touchline.

Even a minute later, Ronaldo was seen still shaking his head as he sits on the bench in front of Ten Hag.

Rashford nearly made a huge impact as he latched onto a through ball and rounded Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, however, Brazilian midfielder Fred failed to convert after being found by Rashford’s pullback.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Rashford missed a sitter as he headed wide from just a few yards out. Newcastle managed to hold on to take a well-deserved point back to the North East.

After the match, Ten Hag stated that his side should have won the game.

He told BBC: "The performance was good, a clean sheet, we pressed well, we controlled the game and in stages we were good on the ball - especially in the second half.

"Then, we dictated the game and in the end we could - we should - have score the winning goal. One from Fred, and then [Marcus] Rashford had to score.

"In the end we could have got the win, we deserved the win, and it is a big compliment to the team that we deserved this with a physical performance against one of the most physical teams in the league. They [Newcastle players] all had cramp and we kept going.

"The team understands from front to back we cooperate together. We are hard to beat and we must keep that going."
