How Lisandro Martinez dealt with the exact same David De Gea pass

How Lisandro Martinez dealt with the exact same David De Gea pass

David De Gea and Harry Maguire were involved in Sevilla’s opening goal against Manchester United

Footage showing how Lisandro Martinez dealt with a pass from David De Gea has emerged after Harry Maguire’s error against Sevilla.

On Thursday night, United produced an error-laden performance at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as they were knocked out of the Europa League after losing 3-0 to Sevilla.

For the first goal, De Gea played a risky pass to Maguire on the edge of the box.

Maguire was then forced into an error by Erik Lamela, with the ball falling perfectly for Youssef En Nesyri, who cooly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

After the goal, De Gea was slammed for passing the ball to Maguire knowing that three Sevilla players were ready to press.

However, footage from United’s match against Real Betis showed De Gea making the same pass to Martinez.

Unlike Maguire, Martinez managed to get himself out of the press before passing the ball to Luke Shaw.

Fans were quick to react on social media.

One said: “This was Martinez when De Gea gave him SAME PASS but let’s blame De Gea for Maguire’s zero football IQ.”

Another tweeted: “This even looks more complicated than the Maguire situation. How are they blaming de gea for making an accurate pass?”

A third fan added: “Maguire had a lot more space and enough time to even make a decent pass compared to this pass which Licha dealt with brilliantly.... this is what a good, competent CB can do!!”

After the defeat by Sevilla, United boss Erik ten Hag said: “It’s clear. When we make such mistakes, it’s difficult to win a football game.

“It’s a problem and we have to acknowledge it but against Brighton, we have an opportunity to work on that. You have seen what I have seen. We were not composed or calm.”

Ten Hag also backed De Gea, he said: David de Gea as a long-term goalkeeper? He is the one with the cleanest sheets in the Premier League.”

United are back in action on Sunday as they take on Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final.
