Louis Van Gaal Publicly Urges Jurrien Timber To Turn Down Move To Manchester United This Summer

The former United manager sent a warning to the Ajax defender in a recent press conference.

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has fired a not-so-subtle warning to Jurrien Timber over a potential summer move to Manchester United, claiming it would "not be wise" to join the ranks at Old Trafford.

Ajax centre-back Timber, 20, has been heavily linked with a transfer following an impressive campaign for the Eredivisie champions, where he made 38 appearances in all competitions.

In fact, it was reported last month that new Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is trying to persuade the young defender to follow in his footsteps and make the trip to England.

Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan is "absolutely convinced" United will snap up Timber this summer. “I know the player said he has to think about leaving Ajax… I think it was all political talk," he told talkSPORT.

“I think he’s already made his mind up and he will join Ten Hag.”

But somebody who believes the move would be a negative one for Timber is former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

In his recent press conference ahead of the Netherlands' upcoming Nations League clash against Wales, the 70-year-old gave his honest thoughts on the idea of Timber joining his old club.

"I think a player of his quality can play in the Premier League. That is not a problem," Van Gaal said.

"If he has to make this big step now, that's the question... it is not so wise I think (to join Manchester United). He has to play."

In contrast to Van Gaal, former Ajax defender Marciano Vink believes Timber would be a perfect signing for United as they look to improve under new coach Erik ten Hag.

"In defence, they need to reinforce and Timber is being named as one of the guys they want to bring in," he told ESPN FC.

"Timber, in my opinion, he’s a very gifted young player, he’s always comfortable on the ball, he’s a good defender but most of all he anticipates really well.

"Those kinds of players you need to bring in to Man Utd to get to a higher level. I know for England they’re not common or well-known names but you need to start playing football again.

"I have seen many matches of Man United and it was lacking pace. There were too many players satisfied playing for Man United and not eager to win, not eager to play for the club.

"[Ten Hag] has to change the behaviour and mentality in the club. It’s going to take a while."
