“Terrible” Liverpool star slammed after dismal horror showing against Wolves

“Terrible” Liverpool star slammed after dismal horror showing against Wolves

Liverpool were comfortably beaten by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon

Liverpool fans have slammed Joel Matip’s performance during the Reds’ dismal display against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

On Saturday afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s men arrived at the Molineux Stadium looking to kickstart their season after their recent poor run.

However, their hopes of clinching all three points were dashed within 12 minutes after an own goal by Joel Matip and a strike from Wolves debutant Craig Dawson.

In the second half, Liverpool looked fractionally better but were still unable to break down the stubborn Wolves defence. In the 71st minute, Ruben Neves wrapped up the game with a fine goal to make it 3-0.

Although many Liverpool players were poor, central defender Matip got the majority of the criticism from the fans.

The 31-year-old has struggled to recapture his form from last season and it showed once again during the torrid afternoon for Klopp’s team in the West Midlands.

Matip was perhaps unlucky for his own goal as the cross deflected off his leg but he did not cover himself in glory for the rest of the afternoon as he struggled against the Wolves front line.

Liverpool fans did not hold back in their assessment of the Cameroonian on social media.

One said: “Joel Matip is another who has really, really declined this season.”

Another tweeted: “People like him because he walks funnily, but Joel Matip needs to go in the summer. He’s not a good footballer anymore.

A third added: “Bin Matip ffs! Terrible defending.”

Someone else commented: “Joel Matip hall of shame performance.”

As a result of their horror show, Liverpool remain in 10th place in the Premier League table with 29 points.

During his post-match interview, Klopp said: “We better change it. That's true, 100%. I have no words for it really, I'm sorry.”

Up next for the Anfield club will be the much anticipated Merseyside derby against Everton.
