Liverpool are targeting the signing of Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat, according to reports - and already hold a major advantage in the race for his signature.

Amrabat played 90 minutes in each of Morocco's three World Cup group games, as they produced some excellent displays to top the group ahead of Croatia, Belgium and Canada.

The 26-year-old is also likely to be named in the line-up to take on Spain on Wednesday, as the nation look to reach their first-ever World Cup quarter-final.

Amrabat has lined up as a defensive midfielder during the tournament, breaking up opposition attacks whilst starting attacking moves for his own side with his impressive passing range.

At club level, he is a regular in the Fiorentina side which has made it to the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg, Liverpool are one of the clubs keen on signing Amrabat, with the same source claiming that Fiorentina have slapped a £30-40 million price tag on the player.

That would certainly make him an affordable option for Jurgen Klopp's side, who are on the lookout for a midfielder to add to their squad.

Amrabat to Liverpool?

Italian outlet Correire dello Sport back up Plettenburg's claims that Amrabat is 'open' to leaving the Italian club, reporting that the 26-year-old wants to play Champions League football.

That is something Fiorentina cannot currently offer, with the side competing in the Europa Conference League.

They are currently 11 points off the Champions League qualification spots in Serie A - and it is a competition they have not played in since the 2009/10 season.

Liverpool, on the other hand, could offer top-level European football, with Klopp's side in the knockout stages. They will take on Real Madrid in the last 16. It is claimed they have already made contact with Amrabat's representatives.

They do currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League - seven points off the top four. However, they have a game in hand, and won their most recent two games before the World Cup break.

The signing of Amrabat in January could help push them into the top four spots come May.
