'Spectacular' World Cup star set for dream Liverpool move, would be a superb signing

Liverpool have made contact with Benfica over a move for midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to new reports.

Fernandez is currently at the World Cup in Qatar with Argentina, and has been played an increasingly important role throughout the tournament.

The 21-year-old scored his first senior international goal against Mexico, and was later rewarded with a start in the last 16 victory over Poland.

Fernandez assisted Julian Alvarez for Argentina's second goal in a 2-0 win, and he also started Friday's quarter-final clash with Netherlands, which Argentina won on penalties.

The Benfica star played the full 120 minutes, but did miss his spot kick.

Regardless, Argentina sealed progression to the last four as a result of Emiliano Martinez's heroics, and Fernandez will hope to help his nation to their first World Cup final since 2014.

Upon his return from Qatar, he may be preparing to play for a new club, as per reports.

Liverpool 'make contact' over Enzo Fernandez

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Liverpool have 'made contact' with Benfica in an attempt to sign Fernandez.

It is claimed that the midfielder already has a pre-agreement with the Reds over a move, whilst Real Madrid are also said to be interested in the player.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Fernandez has impressed with his passing range and ability in attacking areas in Qatar, and would provide an all-round threat for Liverpool should they succeed in bringing him to Anfield.

He has earned praise from Lionel Messi, who said after Argentina's 2-0 win over Mexico (via Goal): "He is a spectacular boy, and a very important player for us. Happy for him, and for us, that he gave us peace of mind with his goal."

It is worth noting, in addition, that the report comes from the same outlet that broke the news of Darwin Nunez's move to Liverpool in the summer.

However, the deal to sign Fernandez may be more costly than the one for the Uruguayan, with Fabrizio Romano claiming Benfica will demand the payment of the midfielder's €120m release clause in order to allow him to leave.

But a move to Liverpool may be too much for the 21-year-old to turn down, meaning club and player could convince Benfica to sell for less.
