Liverpool set to rival Man Utd for defender who is 'better than Van Dijk'

Liverpool set to rival Man Utd for defender who is 'better than Van Dijk'

Liverpool and Man Utd are set to battle it out for his signature.

Liverpool look set to rival Manchester United for a player that Virgil van Dijk has admitted is better than he was at the same stage of his career.

Sky Germany has reported that Liverpool are interested in Ajax duo Jurrien Timber and Edson Alvarez.

Both players have previously been linked with a move to the Premier League.

Chelsea failed in their attempts to sign Alvarez last summer, while Timber rejected a move to Manchester United in order to remain at Ajax – deeming it his best chance of playing for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar.

Timber has left the door open for a potential move this summer, however, with United boss Erik ten Hag reportedly still interested in signing the 21-year-old.

"Transfer? You never know what crosses your path. This summer I will look at my options and make a decision," said Timber.

"I feel good at Ajax, that's important for now. Last summer there was interest, but I chose to stay."

Van Dijk: Timber is better than I was

Liverpool star Van Dijk has previously spoken of his admiration for Timber and believes his Netherlands teammate has everything needed to become one of the world's best defenders.

Speaking back in September, Van Dijk said: "I wasn't nearly as far along as he is now (at the same age). I have nothing but praise for him. He is a great player and a true professional.

"He has so much potential. Hopefully he can develop further. Then it will be all right, I think."

Liverpool may look to bring in another centre-back this summer with the future of several of their defenders uncertain.

Joe Gomez's form this season has been a major concern, while both Joel Matip and Nat Phillips have been linked with moves away from Anfield.

Meanwhile, Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have struggled with injuries this season, which have contributed to Liverpool's inconsistency.

Klopp's side next face Bournemouth away from home on Saturday and will be hoping for a repeat of the reverse fixture, which finished 9-0 to the Reds at Anfield - the joint-largest win in the history of the Premier League.
