17 year old Barcelona midfield prodigy Gavi has become a top priority for Liverpool this summer after a breakout season in Catalonia.

The Merseyside team are apparently determined to trigger the Spaniard’s £51.4 million release clause, in a bid to bolster midfield options. Jurgen Klopp has called him a ‘great market opportunity’ and has been tracking the player’s rise for a long time.

Sadly for Liverpool fans, however, in recent days Fabrizio Romano has reported that Gavi wants to stay at Barcelona and is ready to commit his long term future to the club. Negotiations between the club and player are set to resume in a few days, with Gavi’s agent recently receiving the formal contract offer, which is reported to be a 5 year deal with a €1 billion release clause. This is partly due to pressure from head coach Xavi, who said the club ‘cannot allow such a great talent’ to leave.

Barcelona already face an uphill struggle this summer, with the La Liga salary cap rule (calculated based on previous seasons’ earnings) causing them significant headaches as they try to strengthen their squad this summer. Despite having already completed formal agreements with Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie, they are currently unable to register the players due to budget constraints, so may be forced to sell players if they want to bring in any new additions. However, Gavi is seen to be an integral part of Barcelona’s future, and the Catalonian giants will fight tooth and nail to keep him.
