Liverpool fans are panicking after 'embarrassing' squad depth graphic goes viral ahead of new season

Liverpool may need to make some serious moves in this summer's transfer window to get up to speed.

A graphic showing Liverpool's 'worrying' squad depth has gone viral, with many fans suggesting a busy transfer window is needed ahead of their Premier League opener on August 13.

Jurgen Klopp's side will play Europa League football in the coming months after finishing fifth last season.

It was a tricky campaign hampered by lengthy injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, while experienced trio Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson – to name just a few – struggled to hit their form of old.

Sadio Mane's departure last summer was also a move that disrupted the Liverpool camp; not to mention a change in formation and the unstoppable force of champions Manchester City.

In the coming weeks, Liverpool will once again need to act in the transfer market as Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain depart at the end of their current deals.

The Reds have, of course, been linked with numerous signings, including Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, Juventus forward Federico Chiesa and Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.

But at the time of writing [June 25], their current squad depth is worryingly thin, with Fabio Carvalho set to join RB Leipzig on a season-long loan.

Twitter user @Tom1000j posted a graphic of their current first-team squad featuring youngsters Tyler Morton and Stefan Bajcetic in midfield, Sepp van den Berg in defence and a very strong front six.

Here's how Liverpool fans on social media reacted to their squad depth.

One said: "Klopp is in for a mad reality check next season," while another commented: "Absolutely awful squad, This Transfer market summer is probably our most important market the last five years but We're seeing our burget gone after spending €35m for Mac Allister? Our Top four next season is questionable."

A third wrote: "This is the most important transfer window we’ve had in several years. Seeing complaints about only one player being signed so far, but if it means getting it spot on I’ll happily wait. The primes of Salah, VVD and Alisson are on borrowed time. We can’t afford to screw up again."

A fourth added: "Smallest squad I've seen in 35 plus years supporting the club, we need 5 or 6 players this summer not 2 or 3."

A fifth said: "You can’t win trophies or get top four with this midfield. Mac Allister would start for City, other midfielders are squad option at best for a mid table club. Even the defence is full of slow, injury prone, declining players. No back up for VVD or Ibou when they’re injured."

Another commented: "Europa League squad. Still so much work to be done - need 4/5 additions still but have little faith given past windows that we’ll do what it takes."

Thoughts on the above graphic? How many players do Liverpool need to sign in the summer to challenge in all competitions?

Let us know in the comments.
