"He wants to continue..." - Liverpool star seeking new deal until 2025 despite interest from abroad

It looks as though he will stay at Anfield.

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is keen to sign a new contract with the club, according to reports.

Firmino arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2015 from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a fee in the region of £29million. The Brazilian has since gone on to score 107 goals for the Reds, registering a further 71 assists.

News of a potential contract extension will come as a huge relief to many supporters. The 31-year-old has become a fan favourite in Merseyside, winning praise for his excellent link-up play.

Firmino's future has been in the balance for some time, after the Brazilian was linked with Spanish giants Barcelona earlier in the month, and Juventus last summer.

Following the arrival of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, it looked as though Firmino may become surplus to requirements. However, Jurgen Klopp has generally stuck with his No 9 when he is available this season.

A calf injury has kept him out of action since the Premier League restart, with supporters eagerly awaiting his return having seen their side slip to ninth in the table.

"He wants to continue at the highest level"

With just six months left on his contract, journalist Florian Plettenberg believes he will extend, suggesting that he wants to remain playing at the "highest level".

Plettenberg tweeted: "Clubs from 🇸🇦 [Saudi Arabia] are still pushing but clear tendency now and at this stage: Contract extension with Liverpool! At least until 2025.

"He wants to continue at the highest level."

Whilst an extension would please many fans, others may be questioning Klopp's decision, believing the manager's attention should be on strengthening other areas of the team.

Should Firmino extend, the Reds' front line will be stacked. When fit, Klopp will have Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo all at his disposal, creating a huge competition for places.

Meanwhile, midfielders James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain are all out of contract in the summer, leaving fans concerned about the lack of options in midfield.
