Real Madrid suffer huge injury scare ahead of Liverpool clash, Reds fans will be delighted

This could completely change the game.

Liverpool have been handed a major boost following an injury to Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois that could keep him out of the pair's Champions League clash.

Liverpool host Carlo Ancelotti's men on February 21 in the last Champions League last 16, just over six months since last year's final, where Real Madrid came away 1-0 winners.

Much of their success was attributed to Courtois after he pulled off some remarkable saves to keep the Reds out. His heroics earned him the Yashin Trophy, becoming the best goalkeeper in the world.

But in a huge scare for Real, the Belgium international could be unavailable for his side's trip to Anfield.

The 30-year-old was set to start against Mallorca on Sunday evening, but picked up an adductor injury in the warm-up which prevented him taking part.

Los Blancos ended up losing 1-0 as they struggle to keep pace with bitter rivals Barcelona at the top of the table.

According to Spanish news outlet Marca, Courtois will undergo a scan on Monday morning to determine the severity of the injury.

However, The Athletic report that the former Chelsea shot-stopper should definitely be in contention to play in the knockout tie.

Who else is a doubt for the game?

Courtois joins a list of several injured absentees with both Karim Benzema and Eder Militao both currently unavailable.

Ferland Mendy, Eden Hazard and Lucas Vazquez are also sidelined after picking up knocks and it's unclear when they will return. However, Ancelotti recently hinted that both Benzema and Militao could be back in time to face Jurgen Klopp's side.

Liverpool have had their own injury problems this season, missing several first team players which have seen them drop to 10th in the Premier League table.

A 3-0 defeat to Wolves on the weekend underlined their problems, and will not inspire confidence ahead of their clash with the reigning Champions.

However, there could be light at the end of the tunnel, with Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz all closing in on returns.
