Liverpool U19s defeated Porto in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday via a penalty shootout - but the aftermath of the game certainly wasn't short on controversy.

The Reds drew 1-1 with the Portuguese giants at Kirkby, with Melkamu Frauendorf netting a second half equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Chaos then ensued, with three missed penalties in the shootout, a mass brawl and three red cards.

Porto's Jesus Diaz - the brother of Reds star Luis - was one of the players to miss a spot-kick, before forward Umaro Cande then hit the bar with his penalty to spark wild celebrations amongst the Liverpool youngsters.

However, according to the Liverpool Echo, Cande appeared to take issue with the celebrations and made his feelings clear to several members of the Reds squad.

What followed was a mass brawl between the two sets of players, and Doak can be seen with a busted lip in the aftermath on the following clip.

Three red cards were shown by the referee, with Cande, Porto team-mate Goncalo Ribeiro and Liverpool's Lewis Koumas - the son of former Reds, West Brom and Tranmere midfielder Jason - all sent off.

Liverpool through to UEFA Youth League quarter-finals

After the two sets of players were pulled apart from each other, the Reds were able to celebrate reaching the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Youth League.

They will now face Sporting Lisbon U19 in the last eight, with a semi-final tie against AZ Alkmaar or Real Madrid awaiting them if they can progress further.

Liverpool boss Barry Lewtas praised his players for the performance, although said the post-match scenes were a 'shame'.

He said (quotes via Liverpool Echo): "Whether there was a little bit of antagonising I don't know. It would be really unfair for me to comment.

"It was a shame the way it went. I could sense from the bench that a few things went against them [Porto], it could go a certain way.

"Sometimes you have 30-odd young boys there and it can spill over. It was a bit disappointing because it looked like the playground a little bit towards the end. And I don't think our performance replicated that.

"Listen, I've just spoken to the players then. We spoke about the way they behave on the way across. I think once you do settle down and the emotion comes out, you can behave in a certain way. I think the lads have calmed down and gone in."
