Darwin Nunez took one of the worst penalties ever as Liverpool lost their penalty shootout against AC Milan in the Dubai Super Cup on Friday.

Prior to the shootout, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were too good as they recorded a 4-1 victory against the Serie A outfit.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool before Milan winger Alexis Saelemaekers levelled things up just before the half-hour mark.

Thiago Alcantara’s sweet strike gave the Reds a half-time lead.

In the second half, Klopp introduced Nunez after the striker returned from World Cup duty which saw his Uruguay side crash out at the group stage.

Nunez was sharp as he found the back of the net not once but twice to seal a 4-1 victory.

As is the rule of the Dubai Super Cup, a penalty shootout took place after the final whistle regardless of the result for the chance to win a bonus point.

After Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita missed their kicks, Nunez was tasked with keeping his side in the contest as he stepped up to take Liverpool’s fifth penalty.

The Uruguayan slowly stepped up and tickled the ball tamely towards goal, to everyone’s surprise, Milan goalkeeper Antonio Mirante failed to keep it out as the ball crept under the goalkeeper’s hands.

Nunez smiled and shared a fist bump with the keeper as he knew he had gotten away with it after such a poor penalty.

Even Liverpool boss Klopp couldn’t hide his smile as he looked on from the touchline. Milan eventually won the shootout 4-3.

Fans were quick to react to Nunez’s effort on social media.

One said: “That Nunez penalty might be the worst one I have ever seen and he still somehow scored it.”

Another tweeted: “That is one funny penalty from Nunez.”

A third fan added: “Nunez penalty bro, I love this guy. One of a kind.”

Liverpool will now prepare for the return of domestic football after the conclusion of the World Cup on Sunday. Their first match will be a Carabao Cup clash against Manchester City on Thursday evening.
