Martinez has starred for Man United who shelled out a reported £47 million to acquire his services from Ajax last summer.

He was one of Erik ten Hag's main transfer targets following his appointment and the defender dubbed 'The Butcher' hasn't disappointed.

Martinez has played 15 games in all competitions and has already become one of Ten Hag's main lieutenants.

His tenacity is loved by Man United fans following his clashes with the likes of Mason Mount and Harry Kane.

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand hailed Martinez and his partnership with Varane.

"Martinez has been top this season but Varane gives us that something different, that speed, that experience and physicality," he said. "I think he could be a huge loss.

"You need them two [Varane and Martinez] back together. We've seen straight away that those two together make us a different team, it's as simple as that."
