Barcelona manager Xavi has declared that the doors will always be open for Lionel Messi to make a sensational return to the Catalan club.

Argentina legend Messi came through the academy system at Barcelona and developed into arguably the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch.

However, Messi’s journey with Barcelona came to a tearful end in the summer of 2021 after the two parties failed to agree on a contract extension.

As a result, the Argentine decided to leave the club where he made 778 appearances and scored 672 goals.

After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed that Messi had signed for French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain.

Ever since Messi’s departure, there have been talks about the forward making a stunning return to the Camp Nou.

When quizzed on the matter, current Barcelona boss and Messi’s former teammate Xavi said the doors will be open should he wish to return.

He told the Hindustan Times: “Why not (about the possibility of Messi’s return)? I think it depends on him.

“What he wants, what he feels. Of course, Barcelona is always Messi's home. Doors will be opened for Leo, especially if I'm the coach here.

“Let's see what he wants to do. The decision depends on Messi more than the club.”

Barcelona are currently basking in good form as they sit top of the La Liga table with 50 points, five points ahead of arch-rivals and defending champions Real Madrid.

Xavi also stated that managing Barcelona is difficult.

He added: “It's difficult to manage Barcelona.

“We have a lot of pressure. We need to win titles. Fortunately, I know the club and the environment.

“I've been here as a player for 24 years, so I'm proud and honoured to be the coach of Barcelona. I know the pressure here, many people criticise us, but this is Barcelona. I accept this challenge. I'm happy to be here. We need to win titles to avoid criticism.”

Barcelona are next in action this weekend as they take on Sevilla on Sunday night.
