Lionel Messi Is Only Europe's 15th Best Free Kick Taker

Lionel Messi Is Only Europe's 15th Best Free Kick Taker

Lionel Messi might be considered the best free kick taker in the world but stats show that he's actually the 15th best taker in Europe when it comes to his conversion rate.

When it comes to football there isn't much that Lionel Messi isn't great at. I have to make sure you know I'm talking about football because evidently he's not great at taxes, and I'd hardly trust him to reach anything on a high up shelf in the kitchen.

Goalscoring, passing, embarrassing a player, running or just anything else when it comes to a football, Messi is pretty much in the top two on the planet, apart from penalties of course.

Free kicks are one of Messi's actual specialities and Spanish media have even been looking into the science of a set piece struck by Barcelona's resident genius.

But, whilst the 31 year old might have the ability to score some absolute worldies, he's not actually one of the most proficient free kick takers in Europe.

According to WhoScored the Argentine sensation is actually 15th in the list when it comes to being clinical from free kicks since the 2014/15 season with teammate Philippe Coutinho top of the charts:

There might be one name that springs to mind that isn't on the list and that's Cristiano Ronaldo. The Juventus forward might have scored some very good free kicks but he misses a hell of a lot too.

A second glance at the table does show that Messi might have missed a lot free kicks but he's also scored 17, which means he's scored at least seven more than anyone else on the list.

Coutinho might be ahead of him but most of his free kick goals came in his former life as a Liverpool player, although maybe Messi should let him have one or two more.

Levante's Enis Bardhi is the least well known name on the list and he tops it. The La Liga player has scored all six of his goals on the list, from the 27 attempts, since the start of last season.

Still, I'd probably rather have Messi taking my free kicks.
