Manchester United could hand Kylian Mbappe his dream shirt number if they pull off a stunning deal to sign the Paris Saint-Germain star this summer.

Mbappe, 24, has informed PSG he won't renew his contract at the Parc des Princes, with his current deal due to expire in 2024.

Rather than seeing him walk away for nothing next summer, PSG may look to cash in on the France international in the upcoming transfer window.

The BBC claim PSG are 'prepared to sell' Mbappe should they receive a suitable offer.

PSG turned down a £189m bid from Real Madrid for Mbappe in 2021 in similar circumstances, with the Frenchman then entering the final year of his previous contract in Paris.

He later turned down the chance to move to the Bernabeu on a free transfer, instead signing a new deal with PSG worth a reported £1m per week.

Real Madrid remain interested in Mbappe and are the bookmakers' favourites to sign the forward, should PSG sell him this summer.

Could Man Utd sign Mbappe?

Manchester United have also been linked with Mbappe, with reports last month claiming bidder Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani hoped to sign the French star if his takeover of the Premier League club was successful.

It now looks increasingly likely that Sheikh Jassim will be named as the preferred bidder by Raine, the American banking group handling the sale on behalf of the Glazer family, with reports in Qatar claiming he has had his fifth and final offer accepted by the American owners.

United may struggle to afford Mbappe this summer, however, with ESPN reporting in February that the club would need to be 'restrained' in the transfer market or risk breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

But it was also claimed that Sheikh Jassim is 'ready to invest in the squad as soon as possible' if his takeover is successful.

Man Utd could hand Mbappe 'dream' shirt number

Should United make an approach for Mbappe this summer, they could offer him his preferred shirt number at club level.

Mbappe currently wears the number seven shirt for PSG and number 10 at international level for France.

While the number 10 is currently taken at United by Marcus Rashford, who has himself been linked with a move to PSG, the iconic number seven shirt is currently up for grabs.

United are yet to reassign the number after Cristiano Ronaldo gave it up following his departure from the club in January.

The number seven shirt has legendary status at Old Trafford, having previously been worn by the likes of George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham in addition to Ronaldo.

And the opportunity to wear the iconic shirt could help United in their pursuit of Mbappe, should PSG decide to sell this summer.
