Kylian Mbappe will not trigger the option to extend his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports, meaning he could leave in this summer's transfer window.

The 24-year-old forward, who has been linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes in recent years, sent a formal letter to Paris Saint-Germain on Monday afternoon, according to L'Equipe.

In this letter, he informed the Ligue 1 champions that he will not, under any circumstances, be activating the option in his contract for a further year until 2025.

PSG were said to be "positive" over talks surrounding a new contract but this latest development has taken the club by surprise as they were making a significant effort to extend his stay.

This latest development could spell the end of Mbappe's six-year stay at Paris Saint-Germain. As it stands, the France international will be a free agent when his contract ends next June.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted the following update on Monday evening.

He wrote: "Kylian Mbappé has informed PSG of his decision: he’ll NOT trigger the option to extend current contract until 2025, it means that deal would expire next June 2024 — as L’Équipé called.

"PSG position: NO plan to lose Kylian for free. Sign new deal now or he could be sold."

The news comes just a day after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez hinted that Mbappe could become a Los Blancos player when the summer window rolls around in 2024.

When asked in the street if Mbappe will be signed, he replied: “Yes, but not this year.”

Last year, Perez spoke about Mbappe after he snubbed a move to Los Blancos. "We didn't sign any pre-contract or agreement with Kylian Mbappe because it's not regular," he told El Chiringuito.

"Kylian Mbappe did not betray me. Mbappe told us his dream was to play for Real Madrid, many and many times. But then all changed in 15 days because of political & economical pressure. His dream had to change.

"Macron called Mbappé, it makes no sense. PSG offered him to be the leader of the project, it changed everything. I didn't see the same Kylian Mbappé that we wanted. Here, no one is bigger than Real Madrid. It won't change."

"It was not easy for Mbappe to receive calls from the president of France... to tell you not to leave the club. Then go to Qatar and they offer things that drive you crazy, probably things out of proportion. This is why Kylian has changed."

Perez added: "I think Kylian Mbappe's mom wanted him to join Real Madrid, she knows it has always been Kylian's dream. I'm sure she wanted Mbappe to join us, but things change and we have to respect. I still respect Kylian, absolutely."
