Kylian Mbappe reveals two reasons he rejected Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool after secret private jet meeting

Kylian Mbappe has explained why he turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool as he opened up on a private jet meeting with Jurgen Klopp.

Mbappe was frequently linked with a move to the six-time European champions and in the summer, Klopp explained the lengths he and Liverpool went to in a bid to try and sign him as an 18-year-old back in 2017.

Klopp, now the manager of the Germany national team, worked for Magenta TV during the World Cup and was greeted by Mbappe after France's quarter-final win over Morocco.

Klopp went on to reveal that he Mbappe was the subject of the "most expensive non-transfer" Liverpool have ever made as his whole family were treated a private jet that flew around in circles.

A secret meeting took place to discuss a potential mega move but ultimately did not materialise as Mbappe chose to stay in France and sign with Paris Saint-Germain.

Klopp explained: “With Mbappé, it was before he went to Paris. That was roughly €500 million, the most expensive non-transfer we’ve ever made. We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the whole Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five cabins. Then we flew around in circles and had a delicious meal. We weren’t allowed to be seen. It was great – and then he went to Paris."

Mbappe has confirmed his plane talks with Klopp and revealed he did not take much convincing from the German given his status in the game.

However, he admitted that he felt it was the right move to sign for PSG, his boyhood club, Mbappe wanted to play in his city of Paris and "didn’t want to leave my country before I was someone".

“I remember we were on the plane and we were turning around and around in the air while he was explaining his project," Mbappe told The Athletic.

“I said, ‘You don’t need to convince me. You’re Jürgen Klopp, it’s Liverpool, a great club, so of course if I’m here, I have some interest. But I have other things, other projects, that are also good.

“I said to him, ‘Whatever decision I take is going to be a good decision because we are talking about some of the biggest clubs in the world'.

“It’s a funny story. But in the end I took the decision to go to PSG because for me, born and raised in Paris, there was no better feeling than to show I could be a star in my home town.”

Back in 2017, Mbappe had quickly developed into one of the top talents in world football after a series of scintillating displays for Monaco in their historic run to the Champions League semi-finals.

He had virtually every major European club after him but Liverpool were a strong candidate for his signature because of his mum.

Fayza Lamari, who acts as an advisor to her son, wanted him to play for Klopp at Liverpool and told him it would be "insane".

Mbappe's mother was stunned when she visited Anfield, taking in the atmosphere and enjoying the city and its people.

She had imagined Mbappe playing for the Reds but it was ultimately his call.

“It was while I was playing in Monaco. I had to take a decision. And yes, I was close to Liverpool,” Mbappe revealed.

“My mum was a big fan of Jürgen Klopp, and the favourite destination for my mum was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there.

“But yes, my mum was always saying ‘Liverpool — you’re going to be there, playing at Anfield, it’s going to be insane for you.’ I was like, ‘OK!’

“She went there [for] the first step of the negotiations. She went to the city, she went to the stadium, she met the people.

“She was like, ‘It’s a wonderful club, everybody’s so kind, it’s a family club, a big club.’

“She went to Anfield and fell in love with it. She watched a few games alone, to feel the atmosphere, because she wanted to imagine me in this stadium."

Mbappe joined PSG on an initial loan deal which then became permanent for a fee of £166 million. He became PSG's record goalscorer and later signed for Real Madrid, where he is already closing in on 100 goals.
