Kylian Mbappe was only the 11th fastest player in the Champions League group stage with surprise name quickest

Kylian Mbappe was only the 11th fastest player in the Champions League group stage with surprise name quickest

The PSG striker could not make the top 10.

Kylian Mbappe was not in the top 10 quickest players in the Champions League group stage this season.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker is known for his electric pace and has been hugely impressive in European football this term, scoring seven goals in six group matches.

But Mbappe's heroics were not enough for PSG to finish top of their group.

The French side were pipped to top spot by Benfica on away goals after the Portuguese side thrashed Maccabi Haifa 6-1 in their final match.

It means PSG now face a potentially tricky tie in the last 16 and could come up against the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City, who all topped their respective groups.

A surprising stat that has emerged out of group stage is that Mbappe did not feature in the top 10 quickest players.

Instead, it was highly rated Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhailo Mudryk and Mbappe's international teammate, Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele, who clocked the joint-fastest speed.

They both reached 36.6km/h at some point during the group stage, according to stats on the Champions League website.

AC Milan forward Rafael Leao was third with a top speed of 36.5km/h, closely followed by Real Madrid's Federico Valverde (36.3km/h).

Arsenal's Nuno Tavares, who is currently on loan at Marseille, and Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies were next on the list with a top speed of 36.2km/h.

Meanwhile, the top 10 was rounded off by Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby (36.1km/h), Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi (36.1km/h), Benfica winger Rafa Silva (35.9km/h) and AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez (35.7km/h).

Mbappe, meanwhile, was 11th on the list with a top speed of 35.6km/h.

Speaking after Wednesday's 2-1 win over Juventus, in which he scored the opening goal, Mbappe admitted PSG were unaware during the match that top spot in the group was under threat from Benfica.

"During the match, we did not know, but in the end, they tried to warn us," Mbappe told RMC Sport after the match.

"But that was the end, it doesn't matter, we qualified. We came to do the work, that's not enough, we'll watch the draw and we'll play to win."
