Arsenal fans think Kylian Mbappe playing for the Gunners is "meant to be" after the Paris Saint-Germain forward handed in a transfer request.

It emerged on Monday night that Mbappe will not trigger the option to extend his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, leading to intense speculation over his immediate future at the Parc des Princes.

The 24-year-old forward reportedly informed the Ligue 1 champions that he will not, under any circumstances, be activating the option in his contract for a further year until 2025.

As it stands, Mbappe will be a free agent when his contract ends next June, although discussions are ongoing over a new contract.

Real Madrid will be Mbappe's most likely destination. The French forward was close to signing for Los Blancos last summer but a deal broke down because of a "political and economical pressure', according to Madrid president Florentino Perez.

"Kylian Mbappe did not betray me," Perez told El Chiringuito. "Mbappe told us his dream was to play for Real Madrid, many and many times. But then all changed in 15 days because of political & economical pressure. His dream had to change."

A number of Premier League clubs have also been linked with a move, including Chelsea, who are ready to register an interest in the player, according to The Times. Manchester United are also considering a move for Mbappe, say Mail Sport, but only after a takeover is complete.

But what about Arsenal? Well, fans think Mbappe playing for the North London side is "meant to be" after a video comparing the PSG forward with club legend Thierry Henry emerged on Twitter alongside the caption: "Somethings are just meant to be. Kylian Mbappe at Arsenal is one of them."

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the above clip.

One said: "Bring the prodigal son home to fulfill his destiny," while another commented: "Mbappe coming to Arsenal and bringing the UCL home and doing what Henry couldn't would be a story for the ages."

A third wrote: "Mbappe gonna bring the champions league home and carry on where Henry left off. The matrix."

A fourth added: "I shouldn’t even be letting this comp gass me like this."

Back in October, Henry criticised Mbappe after he complained about being used out of position.

The former Arsenal forward spoke about having to play in a different position at Barcelona to accommodate Lionel Messi.

"Nobody likes to be exposed to what you're not good at," Henry said on CBS Sports. "You just don't like it. But there is something that is bigger than anything else and that is the club.

"But did they make him feel like the club was the most important thing or did they make him feel like he was more important than the club?

"I will use my own stories. I didn't like to play out high and wide for Barcelona. I hated it! But I did it for the team.

"I didn't like it after a hundred caps and I don't know how many goals I scored for France, I had to play on the left. I didn't hear anyone say, 'Oh, what a nice gesture!' to go on the left instead of players who had less goals and less caps."

Henry added: "There is only one rule: if the boss asks you to do something, you do it, IF it's good for the team! If it's bad for the team, I would get the argument."
