Joao Cancelo won't return to Manchester City as loan move after Bayern Munich set to happen

Cancelo wasn't wanted by Pep Guardiola in January and has struggled at times on loan, but doesn't have to worry about a return to City.

Joao Cancelo is set for a huge summer move, but it won't be to Bayern Munich after frustrations whilst on loan have continued.

Before this season, you would have barely considered that Cancelo would have been leaving Manchester City any time soon, considering how important the full back had been to Pep Guardiola's team.

However, his form was nowhere near his usual peak through the first half of the season, and he took full responsibility for the loss to Liverpool back in October.

He eventually fell out of favour with the manager and found himself on the bench, behind Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis in the pecking order.

Despite that, it still came as a shock when he was loaned to Bayern at the end of the January transfer window, though reports suggested he'd fallen out with Guardiola.

He assisted a goal just 17 minutes into his time in the Bundesliga, but things haven't gone according to plan since then, and he's not always been first choice.

The Portugal star showed his frustration last weekend, when he appeared to be the only member of the team to not celebrate the win over Borussia Dortmund.

His future in Germany is unlikely, with it being extremely doubtful the club would pay his £70 million clause, however that won't mean he'll be left at City.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona are extremely interested in signing the 28-year-old on loan, and he's interested in the move, as long as there's a commitment to make it permanent in the future.

Xavi desperately wants to improve his options at full back, with Ronald Araujo having to play at right back during Wednesday night's Copa del Rey loss to Real Madrid.

Araujo has an excellent reputation but is best suited to centre back, as was shown when he was destroyed by Vinicius Jr during the cup defeat.

Juan Foyth is also on the list of potential signings in the position for Barca, but it's unlikely they'd be able to afford his transfer release clause from Villarreal.

A loan for Cancelo would certainly suit all parties, as it would allow the Spanish league leaders to focus finances elsewhere, give the player Champions League football and not leave Guardiola with a player he no longer wants.

Barcelona's finances are once again having the light shone on them after being unable to register Gavi's contract and needing sponsors to pay for a potential return for Lionel Messi.
