Jermain Defoe is still fuming at David Nugent for stealing his goal

Jermain Defoe is still fuming at David Nugent for stealing his goal

Jermain Defoe recently spoke to Rio Ferdinand about the time David Nugent 'stole his goal' on his England debut.

Jermain Defoe made 57 appearances for England, but there is one incident in his international career that the ex-striker is not over.

Jermain Defoe recently went on Rio Ferdinand's Vibe with Five podcast and talked about a range of topics, from playing on loan at Bournemouth to playing at the World Cup with England.

However, there was an incident that Ferdinand brought up that Defoe didn't look back too fondly on in his prolific playing career.

Ferdinand asked: "Who did we play against that time and who's the guy who came in and scored?"

Defoe swiftly replied: "David Nugent. Yeah David Nugent. Fuming."

Ferdinand continued: "We were playing yeah, and it was like Andorra or someone away, and we bashed them up, I remember David Nugent - he (pointing at Defoe) shot and the keeper saved it, it was just rolling slowly into the net, David Nugent come in and tapped it in!"

"And I remember him yeah (pointing at Defoe again) on the plane, he was going 'nah Ri, nah nah nah I'm pi***d, I'm pi***d', because David Nugent was sitting and holding court laughing and laughing and buzzing about it and he (Defoe) was going 'this man thinks it's a joke!'

Defoe chimed in saying: "And it's his first England goal so people were making noise about it but I thought, I've made the movement to get in, I've shot, snapshot, just got underneath the goalkeeper, I'm running away celebrating, he's just come from nowhere - kicked in in the goal."

Rio Ferdinand followed up the story with a laugh, but Jermain Defoe did not seem humoured in the slightest.

Both forwards came on as substitutes in that game, a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier vs Andorra, with it actually being Nugent's England debut - it was ultimately his only cap for the country as he never received an England call-up again.

His 11 minutes in an England shirt is the shortest stint of any player to have scored for the Three Lions, though in the post-match interview, the then Preston North End striker highlighted his delight in having a one goal, one cap international record.

Defoe went on to play for England until 2017, scoring a total of 20 goals in 57 appearances, featuring for England in three major tournaments.

Nugent may have stolen Defoe's moment in that game, but it's clear to see who ultimately had the last laugh in an England shirt.
