Jamie Carragher Says Real Madrid Are NOT As Good As Chelsea Or Manchester City

Jamie Carragher Says Real Madrid Are NOT As Good As Chelsea Or Manchester City

Madrid beat both Premier League sides en route to the Champions League final.

Jamie Carragher believes Champions League finalists Real Madrid are not on the same level as Chelsea and Manchester City.

Los Blancos face Liverpool in Saint-Denis this evening and they'll be looking to win Europe's elite competition for a 14th time.

They've had a tricky run to the final, defeating Paris Saint-Germain, current holders Chelsea and City en route.

All three victories were in dramatic fashion and Carragher thinks the two English sides are actually better than Carlo Ancelotti's men.

"I've watched Real Madrid in the Champions League this season and they've lost more games in the Champions League than Liverpool have lost all season in all competitions," he explained on Sky Bet's The Overlap.

"Real Madrid are a very good team but they're not as good as Man City and I don't think they're as good as Chelsea - even though they beat both of them.

"You can spin it both ways with the spirit, the winning, the coming back, but they've carried a lot of luck in those games, which you need. If you win every game in the last minute coming from behind, if you're that good a team you don't get yourself in that position all the time."

Real scored late in their ties with Chelsea and City to take them to extra time. They then had too much for their opponents in extra time and Ancelotti managed the games perfectly.

Carragher believes they should've been down and out give the opportunities both Chelsea and City had.

The former Liverpool defender continued: "Man City should have battered them, they should have won [their semi-final first leg] 6-2 at home - and then they're 3-0 down at home to Chelsea.

"Of course, Real can win - it's a one-off game. I just think if City or Liverpool were playing Real Madrid in a one-off game, having their team and playing near their best, they'd win the game. I'm confident."

Liverpool are favourites heading into the final, despite their poor record against Real in recent years.

They lost the 2018 final out in Kiev and were also eliminated from last season's competition at the quarter-final stage by Real.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, beat Liverpool at Anfield while Everton manager in 2021.
