James Maddison won't be in England's World Cup squad, according to reports.

James Maddison is 'likely to miss out' on a spot in England's World Cup squad, according to reports.

Maddison has starred for Leicester City this season, weighing in with goals and assists in the Premier League.

But it appears his fine form won't be enough for him to make Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad.

That's according to The Telegraph, who claim the 25-year-old is 'braced for bad news'.

They claim the Leicester star is set to miss out on a place in Southgate's 26-man squad despite his impressive form.

The thought of Maddison not being on the plane to Qatar has got England fans online talking.

One Twitter user wrote: "What is Southgate doing."

A second tweeted: "Poor Maddison, he deserves a place."

A third added: "The sooner Southgate goes, the better."

Another commented: "It's a joke if Maddison is not on that plane!!"

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Maddison, who has one international cap to his name, said he'd like to get back into the England fold and called playing for his country 'the pinnacle'.

He said: "It's a tough one to talk about. I've got the mindset of working hard to try and get back in because playing for your country and representing England is obviously the pinnacle, you'll have interviewed loads of the lads from the squad and stuff.

"Seeing the lads and the experiences they've had playing for their country, that's what I want, what I'm greedy for, what I'm hungry for.

"I can only keep doing what I'm doing and try to catch the eye of the England manager by scoring and working hard. That's stuff I have been doing and think I have been doing well. It's up to him if he wants to pick me or not."

The Telegraph also report that Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham 'face nervous waits' ahead of Thursday's official announcement.

Southgate is also considering recalls for Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson.

Arsenal's Ben White could be in line to receive a call-up following Reece James' omission.

It's suggested that Southgate may not call-up a specialist left-back other than Luke Shaw.

Kalvin Phillips, who has yet to complete 90 minutes for Manchester City this season, is set to be named in the squad.
