FA Cup hero Ilkay Gundogan celebrated without a winner's medal after the FA ran out

Gundogan scored both of Manchester City's goals as they defeated rivals Manchester United but was not handed a medal.

Fans couldn't believe the scenes as one Manchester City FA Cup winning star was left without a winner's medal whilst squad players were given them.

I won't lie to you guys, as a Manchester United fan who was left sat in the City end at Wembley yesterday I have dreaded writing about this game, but the job is the job.

Pep Guardiola's side landed the second of the three trophies as they continue their quest to equal their rivals and win the Treble this season.

City scored the quickest goal in FA Cup final history and it looked pretty ominous for Erik ten Hag's side from there, though they were given a lifeline through a baffling and controversial penalty decision.

United were also somewhat lucky to not be down to 10 men after Casemiro's ugly challenge on Manuel Akanji, which the Brazilian actually got a free kick for.

But it was Guardiola's side who ended up victorious despite the major refereeing decisions going against them, with Gundogan grabbing the second and winning goal.

The midfielder nearly became only the fourth man ever to score a hat-trick in the FA Cup final, only for his goal to be disallowed.

He unsurprisingly was given the Player of the Match award but fans noticed that he wasn't handed a medal as the FA seemed to run out of them.

The likes of Rico Lewis, Cole Palmer and the much maligned Kalvin Phillips all got medals earlier in the procession but as the captain Gundogan was last up and missed out.

Kevin de Bruyne also missed out initially but could be seen being handed a medal by Ederson afterwards and was on the pitch wearing one.

Fans couldn't believe that the captain had missed out though. "Poor Gundogan. Captain, double goalscorer and MOTM but doesn't get a medal as they've run out," said one fan.

"The worst part of this final was that Gundogan didn't receive a winners medal on the podium because they hard run out, how does that even happen?" questioned a second.

Noting Phillips' contribution to the win, another said: "I love Phillips but it was nothing short of embarrassing watching him be 4th/5th to pick up a medal and hold up a trophy that he played little to no part in winning. Gundogan didn't get a medal at the time but KP did."

"Can't give Gundogan a medal because they've run out.... But Kalvin Phillips got his," replied a fourth.

Another supporter hilariously compared Gundogan to Chewbacca not getting a medal at the end of Star Wars Episode IVL A New Hope.

Gundogan will undoubtedly end up getting a medal and will be hoping to add a third of the season at next weekend's Champions League final.

City fans will be hoping the midfielder's future is sorted soon as he has become such an important player for them especially in the big games.

He has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Barcelona with the 32-year-old's contract set to expire at the end of the month.

That wasn't too difficult to write about in the end...
