Riyad Mahrez Takes On Harry Kane In A Battle Of The Iconic Volleys

Now we want your #GoalsRecreated

The Premier League returns this weekend, and thank goodness for that. While football may have only abandoned us for a month or so, that time in purgatory left us gagging to score like a sailor on shore leave. Or something like that.

Champions Leicester begin their title defence against newly-promoted and managerless Hull; looking to repeat the feats of what was one of the most iconic seasons in the top division's history.

The moment Wes Morgan lifted that coveted trophy at the King Power Stadium in May will live on in the annals of football history as a feat unlikely to be repeated. From relegation candidates to title winners in just months - it was a story for the ages.

And while we're getting all misty-eyed about the recent past, we thought we would mark the start of the new campaign by going further back in time to reflect on some other glorious moments from seasons previous.

The two instances in question on this occasion are a pair of quite amazing volleys - one from Paul Scholes (and there are plenty to choose from) and the other from Paolo Di Canio (the best ever goal in the Premier League?).

This is inspired by BT Sport, who have been whetting the appetite of all of us in recent weeks by launching #GoalsRecreated - a season-long challenge for players and fans to produce carbon copies of some of English football's greatest strikes.

So, on our part, this is a nostalgic reminiscence with a twist. Rather than eulogise about the Scholes stunner vs Bradford and that Di Canio screamer against Wimbledon, let's compare and contrast these two goals as recreated by a couple of modern day stars.

In the Scholes corner is Harry Kane of Tottenham, who put his best efforts into thumping one past the goalkeeper's left just as the Manchester United legend did all those years ago.

TheSPORTbible Rating

Precision: 5/10

Sorry, Harry, but we are going to rate you low on this one. The England centre-forward caught the first two attempts very nicely but, unfortunately, angled them towards the wrong corner.

When he did get find the right side of the goalkeeper with his third strike, the ball hit the back of the net about halfway up - rather than dipping into the bottom bins like Scholes' effort.

Execution: 8/10

Not much wrong in this department as Kane nailed all three of his attempts on the volley. The third effort, ultimately the one that mattered, came cleanly off the laces and zipped through the air not too dissimilar to the Scholes goal in question.

Overall likeness: A respectable 7/10

Representing Di Canio is reigning PFA Players' Player of the Year winner Riyad Mahrez, who had the rather less enviable task of banging a scissor-kick past the keeper.

TheSPORTbible Rating

Precision: 5/10

Mahrez himself comments in the clip that he has 'very high standards' so, despite scoring two volleys while in the air, will concede that neither were replicas of Di Canio.

Actually, the third of Mahrez's efforts - which came back off the far post - was probably the nearest to the Di Canio worldie.

Execution: 7/10

Third strike aside, Mahrez connected brilliantly with his attempts - scoring twice and hitting the post once. And that's not bad for a very difficult skill.

However, despite the difficulty, he gets marked down given that he tends to latch on the ball from a standing start rather than take it fully on the run like the West Ham legend.

Overall likeness: Practically impossible to get this one bang on, so a sterling effort. But it just wasn't close enough to the real thing - 6/10

Now it's over to you to have a go. Get your boots on, head down to the local rec and send in your #GoalsRecreated by using the hashtag. BT Sport's panel of judges will pick one of your screamers as their favourite of the season and the winner will receive two tickets to the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff.

And another thing - each month, the best goals will be featured by BT Sport and one of you will win a prize for your efforts. Go to http://www.btsport.com/GoalsRecreated for more information and the T&C's.
