Wrexham have confirmed their first signing since securing promotion to League One.

The Red Dragons achieved historic back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson, finishing second with 88 points.

They will play in the third tier for the first time in 19 years next season and released eight players at the end of the season.

Although their wage bill is already slated to be one of the highest in League One, the club, backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are expected to bring in plenty of reinforcements.

And they have kicked out their summer business by completing a permanent deal for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

He spent last season on loan at Wrexham, playing 39 times in all competitions after Ben Foster retired early in the campaign.

Named in the League Two Team of the Year after a fine year, Wrexham had to fight off competition from a number of clubs for his signature.

But he became free agent after failing to agree a new contract with Arsenal, meaning no transfer fee required.

The 22-year-old was widely expected to leave with his deal due to expire and confirmed his departure.

Okonkwo took to Instagram to post an emotional statement after ending a 15-year association with the Gunners.

He wrote: "The time has come to say goodbye @arsenal. Having joined the Club in 2009 at 8 years old, I have so many incredible memories from over 15 years.

"I’ve made friends for life and owe so much to the all the coaches I’ve worked with, team-mates I’ve played with, fans who’ve supported me and everyone involved with the Club for helping me grow and develop into the person and player I am today.

"Arsenal will always be special to me and I hope to see them be successful in the coming years. Thank you."

Hollywood star Reynolds liked the post, while Wrexham striker Paul Mullin couldn't resist a cheeky comment, adding an eyes emoji and laughing face under the post.

And the reactions were telling as shortly after, Wrexham announced the permanent signing of Okonkwo on a three-year deal.

Asked about signing permanently, he told the club's official website: "I’m feeling very good, I’m so happy to have finally signed and I can’t wait to get back to it.

“It was amazing last season. We had so many good memories together with the fans, and knowing they wanted me back was a big reason that I’m back. It’s good to finally be here."
