Thomas Tuchel has issued a brutal verdict on Phil Foden, suggesting that “it’s not a guarantee that he will come” to the World Cup.
Foden’s struggles in an England shirt have been well documented in recent years, with the Manchester City star failing to replicate his club form when he links up with the national team.
Despite starting in both of England’s friendlies over the March international break – against Uruguay and Japan – head coach Tuchel appears far from convinced.
Foden, who started as a false nine in the 1-0 defeat to Japan on 31 March, is among the players battling for the number 10 position ahead of the World Cup, with Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham also in the running to start in the role.

Last night, Foden had the fewest touches of any England starter, while also failing to make a positive impact in attacking areas.
The City man’s poor recent showings prompted Tuchel to discuss his form, with the German even suggesting that he may not be included in his 26-man squad for the World Cup.

Speaking to reporters at Wembley, Tuchel said: “He tried everything.
“I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch.
“Obviously, he didn’t have a lot of minutes for City recently. Then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training, and I thought he would surprise us and play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact.”
Foden was named the 2024 Premier League Player of the Season after helping City win the league.
However, over the subsequent two campaigns, he has struggled to reach the same levels of performance.
When asked if he would take underperforming players to the World Cup, Tuchel added: “I can, but the question is whether we will.
“It’s not a guarantee that he will come.
“Like I said, we will not let go of our dream or the question, ‘Why not?’
“Now the most important thing is that the players reintegrate with their clubs, have a good end to the season, and then join us in pre-camp so we can prepare them properly and take steps from there.”
England return to action against New Zealand on 6 June. The Three Lions' World Cup campaign gets underway against Croatia on 17 June.
