A spectator was sent off in a bizarre turn of events during a professional match in Scotland over the weekend.
Seeing players, managers, and clubs’ backroom staff shown a red card is commonplace at the elite level of the game, such as in the Premier League and Champions League, but something fans are less likely to see is a fan being given their marching orders by a referee.
But this is exactly what happened at Meadowbank Stadium on Saturday (January 10).
Home side Edinburgh City fell to a 4-1 defeat against Stirling Albion, with Russell McLean’s hat-trick helping the away side to a victory, putting them sixth in Scottish League Two.

And despite McLean impressing with three strikes, the real talking point of the game occurred during the 86th minute when referee Josh Hay sent a fan off who had been causing disruption throughout the game.

The official ran towards the fan in the stands and brandished a red card.
According to Proper Football, the referee asked security to remove the supporter. However, a report from The National explained how the referee “jokingly” sent the fan off, which provoked laughter inside the stadium.
It is also understood that the fan was not actually ordered to leave the ground.
But this did not stop fans from commenting on social media after Stirling Albion posted about the incident on their X account.
“The ref has just given a red card to a fan in the crowd,” the club posted before fans responded.

One said: “Lol. Means nothing! At worst, he can report fan misconduct, and if the stewards find their behaviour unacceptable, then they can throw them out. Ref giving a red to a fan is just the ref trying to make it about themselves... As usual.”
Another added: “The fans needed to red card the ref. Missed a handball for EC's goal, no penalty for McLean getting taken out at throat height, and as for the stand side lino.... the officials were dreadful today.”
A third claimed: “Sunday league stuff. Absolutely brilliant.”
A fourth commented: “Scottish football is the best in the world.”
