Real Madrid name ineligible player in squad to face Man City in Champions League

Real Madrid have named an ineligible player in the squad to face Manchester City in the Champions League.

Real Madrid have named an ineligible player in the squad to face Manchester City in the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti has named the suspended Aurelien Tchouameni in their travelling squad to face Manchester City in the Champions League.

Of course, the Spanish giants won’t face a punishment merely for naming the France international in the travelling squad

However, it would be a major administrative blunder should he play any part against Pep Guardiola’s side, having been booked in the opening minutes of the thrilling 3-3 first-leg draw at the Bernabeu.

Indeed, Tchouameni conceded the free kick from which Bernardo Silva opened the scoring, and subsequently received his third yellow card of the Champions League campaign.

The yellow rules him out of Real’s visit to City on Wednesday, with bookings only expiring upon the completion of the quarter-final stage.

In turn, there was a surprise among a contingent of supporters on social media when Tchouameni was named in Real's squad to travel to Manchester.

It is a convention for Spanish clubs to name their travelling squad days prior to a match, however, they tend to exclude stars who are either banned or suspended.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender David Alaba did not feature among the travelling squad with both carrying injuries. However, Rodrygo, who is an injury doubt for the reverse fixture against City, was named among the travelling contingent.

Tchouameni returned to his regular midfield role on Saturday, having played centre-back in recent weeks, and scored the only goal in Los Blancos’ 1-0 win over Mallorca.

That game saw Ancelotti rest several key players, with five changes from the team that held City days earlier.

He used the Mallorca game to rest the likes of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Toni Kroos, while also handing starts to Nacho and Antonio Rudiger.
