Steven Gerrard Sends Message to Rangers Fans After Declining Return

Rangers' search for a new manager continues.

Steven Gerrard has left a message for Rangers fans after declining the chance to replace Russell Martin as manager.

Last week, Martin, 39, was sacked by Rangers after a dreadful start to the 25/26 season.

Rangers are currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership table and are 11 points off the top, having only won one of their opening seven matches.

After parting ways with Martin, Rangers turned to former boss Gerrard to reignite the club's season.

Previously, the Liverpool legend led the club to the Scottish Premiership title in the 20/21 season, doing so without losing a match.

Gerrard then left Ibrox for Premier League side Aston Villa back in November 2021. After a promising start, things began to unravel and he was eventually sacked and replaced by Unai Emery after 11 months in charge.

In the summer of 2023, Gerrard became the manager of Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq but left by mutual consent in January 2025.

However, despite holding positive talks, it was reported on Saturday evening that Gerrard had turned down the chance to return to Rangers.

Journalist Ben Jacobs wrote: "Steven Gerrard has decided to withdraw from contention for the Rangers role. Gerrard has decided the timing wasn’t quite right to return and has now removed himself from the process.

"Conversations were positive, and a full agreement was almost reached. Understand both sides have agreed to leave the door open for the future."

After rejecting a return to Ibrox, Gerrard reportedly sent a message to the Rangers faithful.

As per Sky Sports, Gerrard 'expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the Rangers fans' and also wished the club success for the remainder of the season.

Following Gerrard's rejection, the likes of Danny Rohl, Slaven Bilic, Mark Van Bommel and Stephen Robinson are the names linked with the vacancy.

Rangers will return to Scottish Premiership action next weekend when they welcome Dundee United to Ibrox on Saturday.
