The most overrated atmospheres in football have been decided by SPORTbible followers – and the findings are surprising.

Aside from the talent on the pitch, fans of clubs often boast about their atmospheres, with certain teams and grounds seemingly being mentioned more than others.

Of course, atmospheres can fluctuate based on what’s at stake during the match, the time of the kick-off and even the weather.

British football arguably boasts the most raucous atmospheres in Europe – although German and Dutch fans may debate that.

In Britain, the atmosphere is dictated by the action on the pitch, while several countries in Europe have a constant noise from the ‘ultras’ who are usually grouped together in a certain section of the stadium.

Celtic and Rangers also have crackling atmospheres, with Lionel Messi once describing the Hoops’ as the best had ever played in.

“The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them,” Messi said via Celtic’s website back in 2020.

“Celtic Park is a tough place to go to. It’s never easy to get a result there.

“We know we would get a tough game if we drew them in the Champions League, but everybody involved in those Barcelona vs Celtic games wants to go and play there again. It is the best atmosphere in Europe and we all want to experience that again.”

Of course, when the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid come to town, the atmosphere inevitably goes up a notch or two.

One of the best atmospheres in English football is Liverpool's Anfield - namely on Champions League nights.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson once described Liverpool's atmosphere as "marvellous" and "volatile".

"You have to expect that atmosphere there even if you are losing," said Ferguson when speaking to SPORTbible in 2021.

However, despite the 13-time Premier League-winning manager's endorsement, not everyone agrees - including fans on social media.
