Kieran Trippier had a hilarious exchange with former teammate Micah Richards after helping Newcastle end a 70-year wait for a major trophy.

The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley to win the Carabao Cup, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak both on target for Eddie Howe's men.

Substitute Federico Chiesa struck late on to set up a nervy finish but Newcastle held on for a deserved victory which will no doubt spark wild celebrations in the North East.

Many of the Newcastle group had lost the 2023 final to Manchester United but had a very different feeling this time around, with former England defender Trippier getting his hands on the trophy alongside co-captains Bruno Guimaraes and Jamaal Lascelles after walking up the Wembley steps.

He spoke to Kate Scott, Thierry Henry and Richards on CBS Sports after the triumph and for what seemed like the first time in the show's history, the ex right-back received praise from Trippier.

Richards regularly gets rinsed for his career but in a rare instance, Trippier called him a "decent player" after revealing he was the reason he left Manchester City.

Trippier came through the ranks at City and was part of their FA Youth Cup winning side in 2008. However he failed to make a first-team appearance for the club because Richards was holding down the right side of defence.

The former Atletico Madrid Man said: "I have no regrets in my career. Except because of Micah, I couldn't get in at Man City. I had to leave. He was a decent player!"

The kind words from Trippier to Richards led to him asking the 34-year-old, "Can you just explain to people that I was a good footballer on this show?!".

Richards dances with man of the moment

Richards was also involved in another hilarious moment with another Newcastle player. He and goalscorer and Man of the Match Burn performed the defender's signature Fortnite celebration, leaving the rest of the panel in stitches.

The result capped off a fine end to the week for Burn after he was called up to the England squad for the first time. Trippier retired from international duty following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain but Burn and teammates Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon provide the Newcastle representation in the Three Lions side.

Lewis Hall was also in the mix but was ruled out of selection for the latest squad due to injury.
