Fans in disbelief at what Peter Schmeichel said to Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle after Liverpool game

Peter Schmeichel has come under criticism after telling Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle that his former club Manchester United are "looking at signing your left-back" during a live TV interview.

Jaissle, who has succeeded Eddie Howe at St James' Park following a spell in charge of Saudi side Al Ahli, was seconds away from securing a memorable three points on his Premier League bow.

Unfortunately for him, Dominik Szoboszlai scored from the spot in the ninth minute of stoppage time as VAR stood by referee Stuart Attwell's on-field decision to award a penalty following a challenge on Victor Munoz.

Szoboszlai's effort from 12 yards made it 2-2 after it looked like goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock either side of Cody Gakpo's low driven effort would be enough for Newcastle.

But the foul on Munoz by Lewis Hall, who had performed admirably for the majority of Sunday's game, allowed Liverpool to snatch a late point.

On the subject of Hall, Newcastle boss Jaissle is eager to keep hold of the England international, who has been strongly linked with a big-money move to Manchester United this summer.

Speaking to Viaplay after the game, Jaissle was asked about Newcastle's transfer plans.

“I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director [Ross Wilson]," he said. “We have some needs, definitely.”

The 38-year-old was soon asked what area the club are looking to strengthen in the remaining days of the window but, after pausing for a brief moment, pundit Peter Schmeichel was keen to hear more.

"You can tell us," the former goalkeeper said. Jaissle replied: “Because you ask, I was about to tell you but I [will] keep it a secret. If you are bringing players in, maybe there will also be some players out.”

Moments later, Schmeichel said: "We’re [Manchester United] looking at your left-back.”

Jaissle, however, was having none of it. “No chance," he said with a grin on his face. "No chance."

Schmeichel's decision to mention United's pursuit of Hall has been criticised by some fans, with one saying: "Surprised at Schmeichel, think that’s a little disrespectful."

A second wrote: "Bit of a weird interview this, especially what Schmeichel says. Seems they know that he’s a very honest manager and they’re trying to extract as much as they can out of him. Hopefully this doesn’t continue to be a theme this season. We want honesty from managers but don’t push it."

A third commented: "Proper muggy behaviour from Schmeichel that," and a fourth added: "That’s totally wrong and unprofessional."

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Jaissle did not hold back when touching on the decision to award Liverpool a last-gasp penalty for Hall's foul on Munoz.

"For me, it was no penalty - it was a really soft one," he said. "If you give that, we will see many, many penalties. I don't think that Lewis can do anything else, he cannot just disappear on the field.

"It’s a really soft penalty," added Jaissle. "If you give these penalties then you have to give a lot in this season and I’m not sure if that’s good for football."
