The real reason why Tyrell Malacia is still missing for Man Utd

The real reason why Tyrell Malacia is still missing for Man Utd

He could return to action before the New Year.

It's been a while since Manchester United fans have seen left-back Tyrell Malacia in action and the reason for his absence has finally been explained.

The 24-year-old was the first signing through the door under Erik ten Hag, joining the Red Devils from Feyenoord in a deal worth a reported £13 million.

After making 39 appearances during his first campaign in the Premier League, the Dutchman played no part in United’s pre-season tour due to injury.

Little was known about the issue, with Ten Hag simply stating in August: “Malacia will take some time.”

The club then provided a cryptic update on the defender's recovery which left more questions than answers.

On United's official website, a statement read: “Reguilon has missed the last four matches due to a minor injury, while Varane had to sit out the 2-1 win over Brentford, leaving the Reds with just four fit senior defenders as Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are long-term absentees.”

However, a report from the Manchester Evening News has helped provide context on his absence and detailed his potential return date.

The publication claims that Malacia suffered a knee injury last season which the club initially attempted to counter with pain injections, but surgery was eventually required.

It is thought the player was using crutches after the injury and spent some time in the Netherlands to focus on his recovery.

He is now said to be back in Manchester and could return to the pitch before the New Year.

Malacia last played for United against Fulham on the final day of last season, with United having to improvise in the defence.

Victor Lindelof was forced to play left-back during United's dramatic 2-1 win over Brentford last time out at Old Trafford.

United face bottom-of-the-league Sheffield United next in the Premier League in a must win game for Ten Hag.
