Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly made his feelings clear on what Manchester United should do with Erik ten Hag amid speculation over the Dutchman's future.

The Red Devils' 1-0 victory over Fulham on the weekend brought the United manager some much needed respite following the club's worst start to a season in 61 years.

Prior to their win at Craven Cottage, United suffered consecutive 3-0 defeats to local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

Their dismal form led to speculation that Ten Hag could be axed, with former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim tipped as potential replacements.

However, former manager and icon of the club, Ferguson, has allegedly pledged his allegiance to Ten Hag and has no doubts that he is the right man to lead United forward.

A source told The Sun: "Erik has Sir Alex's unwavering support. He's been hugely supportive of Erik since he arrived at the club.

"He's impressed at the job he is doing and, in particular, the way he has taken on big decisions.

"Sir Alex, like everyone else, wishes results were better this season. But he thinks those pointing at the manager and calling for a change are wrong.

“[Ferguson] thinks he’s shown the kind of character and mentality required to turn the club around - and he firmly believes Erik deserves time, like he got, to make a success of things at the club.

"If consulted, that's a position he would be prepared to make clear to any new investors who come into the football club."

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is poised to take over as sporting director at Old once his bid for a 25 per cent stake is confirmed, is also thought to have Ten Hag's back.

The same source went on to compare the 53-year-old's attitude to Ferguson's.

The source added: "Sir Alex had to make decisions all the time during his years as manager which were difficult and risked putting him on a collision course with his players.

"But he never shied away from doing what he felt was right for the club.

"This is a trait Erik is showing too, especially with the way he handled the recent Marcus Rashford situation."
