Manchester United staff were reportedly left stunned by what Ruben Amorim did when he left the club's training base for the final time.

On Monday morning, United announced that Amorim had left Old Trafford after over a year in charge.

Taking to the club's official website, United said: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future."

United are set to take on Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night, with U-18s coach Darren Fletcher taking charge at Turf Moor.

In the hours after Amorim's departure was confirmed, it has been claimed that United staff at the team's Carrington training ground were left surprised by how the Portuguese acted during his final time at the facility.

According to the Daily Mail, staff at Carrington were left surprised when they saw Amorim and his coaching team laughing and joking as they left the training ground.

The report stated: "Certainly, staff at Carrington on Monday were surprised to see Amorim and his coaching staff leave the training ground laughing and joking, the scowl of recent days long gone.

"He is free now and it’s time for United to move on."

Since Amorim's departure, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has become one of the favourites to take over, with the likes of Gareth Southgate, Xavi Hernandez, Zinedine Zidane, Enzo Maresca and Laurent Blanc also linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Amorim leaves United after taking charge of 63 matches, with a record of 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 defeats, which equates to a win rate of just 38.10 per cent.

The highlight of his tenure will be leading the Red Devils to the UEFA Europa League final during the 24/25 season.

However, Amorim's men were beaten 1-0 by fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
