Roy Keane provided a brutally honest answer when asked if he supports former club Manchester United.

Keane joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 1993 in a deal worth £3.75 million, a British transfer record and went on to 480 times, scoring 51 goals and winning seven Premier League titles across 12 years.

Keane's contract was terminated in 2005 following on from an explosive interview with MUTV after a heavy defeat to Middlesbrough and he finished his career with a short-lived spell at Celtic.

As one of the most outspoken pundits in the game, Keane regularly covers United games and has never been afraid to lay into his former side.

However, despite being a United legend, Keane played down his association with the Red Devils and claims he does not support them - nor do their results affect his weekends.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet , Keane said: “I don’t have that affinity with the clubs I’ve played for. I don’t support Manchester United. I don’t support Nottingham Forest.

“[On when you watch Manchester United] I have more of an insight with how it works at the club and the expectations, but I wouldn’t say that I’m a fan – their results don’t make or break my weekend. I wouldn’t go home going, ‘Get in there, that was a great win.’ I’d be looking at it in a professional way.”

However, Keane did confirm that he was full of emotion when his United career came to an end following a frosty meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson, adding: “When I left United, I did cry that morning. Cried in my car.”

Keane does support a Premier League team

On an episode of The Overlap, Keane sported a Tottenham Hotspur Christmas jumper and it turns out that the Irishman is a fan of the North London outfit, having admired them since he was a youngster.

"When I played for Rockmount, one of my teammate's fathers used to bring me to training and he supported Tottenham," Keane said at an event for children's cancer charity Barretstown in 2015.

"That's where it started, I liked their players, the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Clive Allen.

"But after I'd come back from trial at Nottingham Forest, Spurs offered me a trial."

He added: "I turned it down because Forest had been good me, I liked the club and felt some loyalty to them. I had a soft spot for Spurs, and still do."
