A former Manchester United star who left the club in 2024 has issued a response after demanding clarity over a potential return to the club.

Ruben Amorim labeled the current United side 'the worst in history' following their most recent defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

United had made a positive start to 2025, with a draw at Anfield and victory against Arsenal in the FA Cup, however, two uninspiring performances on the spin have brought fans back down to earth.

Amorim will be hoping to strengthen in January, but have been left in a difficult position due to PSR, however, David Ornstein confirmed the club to have scope to do business this month.

United do have an option to bring back a player they sold last January, with the club inserting a £15.2m buy-back option for Álvaro Carreras (Fernandez) when selling to Benfica last year.

According to A Bola, the 21-year-old's agent and family have made contact with United to ask if the Premier League side plans to exercise the option.

Alvaro has a €50 million release clause at Benfica with Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly monitoring the Spaniard's situation, meaning United would be getting the full-back for a cut price.

Speaking via The Metro, Alvaro has played down speculation of a move to Spain and maintained his commitment to Benfica.

"No. In truth, we never know, but I have a long-term contract here at Benfica, I’m happy," he said following Benfica's clash with Barcelona in the Champions League.

"They gave me the opportunity to grow and I owe them everything."

Alvaro currently plays in a back four for the Portuguese side but impressed as a left-wing-back for Preston North End while on loan in the 2022/23 season.

Amorim does have other options for United's left-hand side with David Ornstein reporting, the club have opened talks with Serie A side Lecce over the signing of the 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu.

United are also interested in Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez but face stiff competition from Liverpool.
