Paul Scholes in no doubt when deciding who Man Utd 'should sell' between Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo

Paul Scholes was quick to decide when asked who he would rather see Manchester United 'sell' between Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Scholes, 50, was part of TNT Sports’ broadcast team for United’s 3-1 win against Southampton in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

Despite being one of the club’s most decorated players - with 25 trophies including 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League crowns and two FA Cups during his time at the club – the ex-England international is not afraid to voice his opinion about his former side.

Although United did secure the three points, for much of the game they put in a poor performance with Mainoo, 19, withdrawn at half-time after struggling to get into the game.

Last week, the Mail confirmed that Chelsea were “ready to make a move” for the player as he “cannot agree terms” with United over a new contract.

“United can probably get better than Garnacho,” Scholes said on TNT Sports.

The Argentinian winger has been linked with a move away from United, with Napoli seeing a bid rebuffed by United as they look to replace Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is set for a move to PSG.

On Friday, The Athletic's David Ornstein reported that "Chelsea have made enquires" about Garnacho, 20, as well as Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. But approaches are at "an early stage".

And according to Scholes, he would not be totally against the sale of Garnacho.

"Although he’s young, and there’s more to come, he’s scruffy in his technique at times, and his decision-making at times is really poor," Scholes explained. "I wouldn’t be worried if they sold him. But Mainoo, I’ll be offended by that.”

"On Garnacho, he's been Manchester United's [top goalscorer this season], as you say, all the hard work that the club have to do for him,” Scholes added when discussing the academy graduates with Karen Carney.

However, he dubbed Mainoo as one of "United's brighter sparks".

“He's probably been here since seven, eight years of age, Mainoo, and then obviously, to sell him for some PSR rules, it's ridiculous," he exclaimed.

"He's one of United's brighter sparks and probably the leading man who could be here for the next five to 10 years."

Of course, several academy graduates such as Marcus Rashford, Mainoo and Garnacho have been linked with a move away from the club with the likes of Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay exiting United in recent years. The sale of homegrown players represents 'pure profit' from a PSR standpoint, which helps clubs fall in line with financial regulations.
