Manchester United have reportedly opened talks with Marco Silva to replace Erik ten Hag despite beginning work on a deal to secure Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

Sunday's loss to West Ham at the London Stadium proved to be the final straw for Manchester United, as they announced the sacking of Erik ten Hag the following morning.

The club released the following statement to confirm the news: "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

Following the news it was reported by David Ornsetien that United had opened talks with Sporting over paying the €10m release clause to secure Amorim's services.

The 39-year-old is open to the move, however, new reports suggest there could be a new name that has entered the hat.

According to Guillem Balague, United have approached Marco Silva over a potential move to Old Trafford due to concerns Amorim may prefer a move to Manchester City.

He wrote on X: "I hear from Portugal a new possibility Ruben Amorim might decide to wait for City if Pep leaves. But United pushing for a deal And Marco Silva has also been approached by Manchester United."

Silva has enjoyed a successful return to the Premier League with Fulham after getting sacked by Everton in 2019.

The Portuguese manager has avoided any relegation fears during his spell at Fulham and guided them to 10th and 13th-place finishes in the previous two seasons.

Balague has stressed that Silva is merely an option for United, and the main feeling in Portugal is that Amorim will take over from Ten Hag as manager.
