Michael Carrick told to overturn controversial Man Utd transfer decision

A United legend has suggested the club perform a U-turn ahead of the summer transfer window.

A Manchester United icon has suggested that Michael Carrick should reverse the club’s decision to allow Casemiro to leave upon the expiry of his contract.

The 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder has already confirmed that the 2025/26 campaign will be his last at Old Trafford, meaning he will leave Man United when his current deal expires in June this year.

The São Paulo-born midfielder arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid for an initial £60 million in 2022 and has helped the Red Devils win the FA Cup and League Cup during his time at the club.

In January, Casemiro confirmed his United exit in a heartfelt statement and said he’ll “always be a Manchester United fan”.

But could the midfielder end up staying at the 20-time Premier League champions after all?

Former United captain and two-time Premier League winner Bryan Robson thinks so.

The 69-year-old believes Casemiro should remain at United for at least another season and explained how “he’s had a really good season” this term, with the 34-year-old registering six goals and two assists in 28 appearances.

Speaking to BoyleSports, Robson said: “I would encourage Casemiro to stay.

“He’s a top player. He’s got a great football brain. He’s a really good passer of the ball. He heads the ball well and when he goes into a tackle, he means it.

“You don’t stay at Real Madrid for the number of years he did and win Champions League titles if you’re not an absolute top player and people see what you’re really good at.

“So I think next season he could definitely give us a little bit more with his experience. He was great in Europe last year, too.”

And despite seeing an upturn in his form, United will still likely want to get Casemiro’s hefty reported £450,000 per week – £18.2 million per year – salary off the books, with the Brazilian currently the club’s highest earner, according to Capology.

Several younger players have been linked with potentially replacing the veteran, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton thought to be of interest to United.

The Red Devils return to action against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 15 March.
